Individual denominations have information about their programs, individual bloggers had links to things that they like, etc. but there's no place that collects them all together and organizes them. So I've ambitiously decided that New Church Thought should do this and I'm calling the project New Church Content Directory (NCCD). Exciting, huh?

Here's an attempt at a mission statement for the NCCD: “The New Church Content Directory will contain well-organized, up-to-date, useful information about all things New Church.”

Well-Organized
The NCCD is not well-organized yet. What I've done so far is come up with some main categories and sub-categories. There's a page for each main category and then the individual items are organized under sub-categories—for example, on the Organizations page, there are sub-categories like Organizations That Offer Worship Services, Associations, Movements, Publishers, Translators, etc. You can also see this basic structure in the footer.

It's tricky to figure out what main categories and sub-categories to use and what things should be grouped together or listed in multiple places etc. I am by no means attached to the way I've got things currently organized and would welcome input (in the comments section below) about how to improve it.

Up-to-Date
A directory is only useful if its information is up-to-date. I will do my best to keep things up-to-date but, as with many aspects of this project, it will only be done well with your help. Please let me know if you find any broken links in the NCCD (and you'll get bonus points if you can figure out what the right link is).

I'm hoping that, eventually, a lot of people will be aware of the NCCD and it will be in their own interest to make sure that there's accurate and up-to-date information about their piece of New Church content in the NCCD.

Useful Information
I want to go beyond just listing a bunch of links and contact information. There are a lot of really interesting New Church organizations, websites, projects, etc. out there but, if you don't know what makes a particular project interesting or don't know how to use a website, you might not stay on its website very long. It's the difference between just seeing an ad for something and having your friend send you a link to it with a little explanation of what they liked about it.

This is where "Posts about..." comes in. When possible, in addition to listing just the website for a particular entry, I've also included a link to posts about that entry. For example, I have an entry for the Church of Truth in Kentucky listed under Organizations > Organizations That Offer Worship Services. Frankly, their website (www.truechurchoftruth.com) isn't very good but I find what they're doing really exciting and I've written a couple of posts about it. And, if you click Posts about the Church of Truth you'll find those posts, including one which includes a link to an article about their leader.

Another example is HeavenlyDoctrines.org. It's a great website but not particularly user-friendly. If you click on Posts about HeavenlyDoctrines.org you find 3 posts about it, including tips and tricks about how to use it, and a comparison of it and the other New Church search engines.

Obviously I don't have the time to write multiple posts about every entry in the NCCD but I hope to whittle away at it over time AND I hope to get your help. If you find some great New Church content that isn't in the NCCD yet, why not send me the link and a little blurb about why you like it and how you use it? I'll put that information into a guest post on New Church Thought and then people will have both the link and a little information about it. (That being said, I reserve the right not to publish anything that I consider to be purely promotional material.)

All Things New Church
Did I mention yet that I could use some help with this project? :) If the NCCD is going to come anywhere close to having well-organized, up-to-date, useful information about all things New Church, it will be because of lots of helpful people. The easiest way to help out is just to leave a comment on this post. Please let me know if something is missing, if a link is broken, if you have an idea about how the NCCD could be better organized, if you want to write a short informational post about an item in the NCCD.

Thanks!Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-87082122593277570522011-05-27T14:45:00.000+02:002011-05-27T14:45:16.313+02:00A Couple of New Church Perspectives on May 21stFirst, here's a little snippet from the Nunc Licet Bible Study, where Rev. Jonathan Rose explained briefly (before May 21st) why the end of the world wouldn't happen on May 21st. (Over 5000 views so far - not bad!)

And then here's another great video from Curtis Childs. This one is about the desire to to say, "Ha ha! I told you so!" to the people whose predictions about May 21st didn't come true. Honestly, you should just subscribe to his channel (offTheLeftEye) already.

Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-10013471869511730622011-05-16T22:05:00.000+02:002011-07-05T13:52:42.179+02:00A New Church Bible Study Website Project That's Gaining Some SteamBack in March of last year I first heard from Brian David about a concept for a New Church Bible study website that he was working on with a couple of other people. One of the early experiments with the concept from around that time was internalword.com.

The project has now had a lot more thought put into it and they've done some presentations to try to get funding for it. And so now, rather than have me try to explain the concept behind the site, I can just tell you to watch the fun, short, RSA Animate-Style video that they put together.

You can also find a bunch of documents about the project on PittsburghNewChurch.org, including some images of what the user interface might look like. A note about those images: they look like a bad site from the 90s but, never fear, Brian assures me that they were just to try to explain the concept and, when they make the site for real, they'll get professional design and UI help.

Anyway, I think it's a cool idea and I hope that they get the funding that they're looking for so that they can give it a try. It's definitely one of those projects that will only work if a lot of people get involved so, if it sounds interesting to you, be sure to like the New Christian Bible Study page on Facebook.

P.S. They also entered into the debate that Rob Bell's book has stirred up with a little video about the New Church idea of heaven and hell.

Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-75943366615686878362011-05-02T21:47:00.001+02:002011-05-02T22:07:25.771+02:00Live Video Streaming of Bryn Athyn Cathedral ServicesThe Bryn Athyn Cathedral has been streaming audio from their services for years. Now they're also offering live video streaming, using USTREAM.

You can find more information about their audio and video streaming options on the Live Services page of the Bryn Athyn Church website.

I haven't actually tried it out during a service but I have taken a look at the archives on Bryn Athyn Cathedral's USTREAM channel and I was impressed by the quality of the video. I was expecting it to be one badly positioned webcam, streaming grainy footage but, it looks like they've got at least 2 cameras that are well positioned to give pleasant shots of the service and the footage isn't too grainy, even in fullscreen mode.

Let me know if you've tried streaming a service live.

Here's a screenshot of Bryn Athyn Cathedral's USTREAM channel:

Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-64697838146346098122011-03-29T15:35:00.003+02:002011-05-02T21:06:14.322+02:00Nunc Licet Bible Study Now Available Online!"Nunc Licet" is a Latin phrase which means "now it is allowable." This phrase was used by Swedenborg to describe how it is now allowable to enter into the truths of the Word with our understanding.

For this reason Rev. Jonathan Rose chose "Nunc Licet" as the name of a bible study he offers in Bryn Athyn PA, and recently also online.

Though I have never attended in person, I was very pleased to find that the class is now available online, both archived and live streamed. (The next live meeting is 7:30 pm on Wed April 6)

This class regularly receives great reviews. Why?

In addition to all that Rev. Rose brings personally, this class takes a fairly unique approach.

The approach is to look at "the bible, the whole bible and nothing but the bible, through a Swedenborgian lens, with the special purpose of experiencing the Lord in the text." Often in New Church circles, the writings of Swedenborg are studied directly, but in this case the attention remains firmly in the powerful, direct and often confusing teachings of the Old and New Testament.Brian Donald Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04020132668845414163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-25049130357188864572011-01-05T17:09:00.001+02:002011-01-05T17:14:13.888+02:00Help With Writing a Book ProposalIt's less than a month till the February 1st deadline for submitting a book proposal for the Bridge Book Awards.

To help people with their book proposals, back in December there was a webinar in which Rev. Grant Schnarr, author of a number of books, talked people through writing a good book proposal.

You can download the audio from the webinar here. The webinar is about an hour and 10 minutes long. The file is 52.3 MB so it takes a little while to download. It's in WMV format so, if you have a Mac (like I do), you'll need something to convert it so that you can play it. I used a free program that makes it so that you can play it in QuickTime called Flip4Mac WMV. This particular copy of the file expires on January 11th but I'm guessing that, if you ask nicely, I could probably get another one put up or you could just contact Kristine Medley directly (Kristine.Medley@newchurch.org, 267-502-4901).

I hope that there are lots of people working on book proposals. I wish that I had the time to submit something myself.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-1021100488798866532011-01-04T23:12:00.000+02:002011-01-04T23:12:54.237+02:00New Church Perspective is 1 Year OldA year ago, on January 1st, an online magazine called New Church Perspective (www.newchurchperspective.com) launched. The goal was to publish a new essay every Friday and now, 52 Fridays later, 52 essays have been published, by 36 different authors.

If you want to get a sense for the range of topics covered, I'd recommend looking at the digest posts that take 10 essays at a time and provide short blurbs about each of them. Here are the digests for essays 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, and 41-52.

Towards the end of the year New Church Perspective expanded beyond just publishing weekly essays. On October 15th the editors announced the launch of a podcast called ChapmanCast and a column called Meditate. Here are the blurbs about each of these:
ChapmanCast – A New Church podcast about religion and life, featuring discussions and interviews. New episodes publish weekly on Wednesdays and last for about 15-20 minutes. The ChapmanCast is hosted by Pearse Frazier and guests. (Subscribe in iTunes)

Meditate – Meditating on the Word is a powerful way to expand your spiritual life and deepen your awareness of the Lord in your daily living. This column is updated weekly with passages I have chosen to meditate on and the insights that have resulted. I invite you also to meditate on the Word and share your insights with the readers of New Church Perspective.... What is here is shared with humility and I hope it may be a blessing to you. Chelsea Odhner, Editor
You can subscribe to any or all of these features for free by email or using a feed reader.

As Brian Smith, the Editor-in-Chief, puts it, New Church Perspective is intended to be “A Collaborative Adventure for the Sharing and Spreading of the Lord's Wisdom and Love” and there are lots of ways to get involved. One of the best ways is to submit an essay. The requirements are not too demanding (even very short articles are welcome) and the process can be pretty rewarding. Here's an excerpt from an invitation to write from Brian:
I'm writing to you now to invite you to commit to writing one (or more essays) in 2011. Writing is not always easy, but I believe it is always a valuable process. There is a value to the type of thought-leadership which trained priests can offer to spiritual communities. But there is also tremendous value in the musings, questions, conclusions, research and reflections which people from all walks of life come to in their efforts to understand God and live a heavenly life.

...

We only have three guidelines: be respectful of sacred scripture and the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, address spirituality/religion in some way and avoid commenting on individuals and current, specific decisions in the denominational organizations of the New Church.

Even if writing is not for you at this point, please share this invitation with anyone who you think may be interested by the opportunity. We are not looking for orthodoxy so much as we are looking for the heartfelt.
I hope that that whets your appetite to write, read, listen or otherwise participate in some form.

P.S. And if you click on one of the items, you'll see that you can now share it with other people via email, Facebook, Twitter, or a bunch of other services.

These features are also being rolled out to individual society sites like BrynAthynChurch.org. So if you want to stay up to date on a particular local society, or you want to promote an event that's happening at a local society, you now have more methods at your disposal.

The sharing features have also been implemented on NewChurchAudio.org so it's finally easy to send people a link to a sermon that you really liked. I happen to know that other improvements are also in the works for NewChurchAudio.org. I'll let you know when they've been implemented.

--

While we're on the topic of subscriptions, I'll mention that I recently made it so that you can subscribe to New Church Thought by email. If you scroll down on the right you'll see "Get New Posts Emailed to You" and a box where you can put your email address and hit subscribe. And you might just want to subscribe (if you haven't already) because New Church Thought is about to get an exciting overhaul and you'll want to keep up. (If you do subscribe there's a chance that you'll receive some nonsense posts as I work on revamping things. Just think of it as finding a couple of 2x4s in your inbox—part of the excitement of remodeling.)Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-41638976895638984792010-12-03T23:13:00.000+02:002010-12-03T23:13:18.922+02:00Book Proposal Competition
As a collaborative effort to generate dynamic book proposals and publications from aspiring authors, the General Church of the New Jerusalem and the Swedenborg Foundation, publisher of the theological works of Emanuel Swedenborg, are pleased to announce a new competition, called the Bridge Book Awards. The authors of the winning proposals will receive a cash award in the amount of $1,500, be honored at an awards ceremony, and be guaranteed a review by the Swedenborg Foundation Press editorial board with the possibility of publication.
There are 4 categories you can enter: The Afterlife, Living a Spiritual Life, Biblical Commentary from a Swedenborgian/New Church Perspective, and Swedenborg for Dummies.

Entries are due on February 1st, 2011 and must include an entry form, a query letter, a chapter outline or synopsis, and one to three sample chapters.

You can read more about what's required in the Entry Form (PDF) or in the news item about it on newchurch.org.

I'm excited to see what comes of this.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-83076959249026689892010-11-30T19:10:00.000+02:002010-11-30T19:10:28.921+02:00New Church Christmas ReadingsThere are 2 ways you can get New Church Christmas readings this season.

The pastors of the Glenview New Church have put together readings on the theme of “Walking with the Lord.” You can read a description of the program, sign up to receive the readings in daily emails, or download a PDF of all the readings.

The pastors of the Olivet New Church have also put together daily readings. The results and her conclusions are now available on a website called Swedenborgian Thinking Today.

On the site there are the "Defining Faith" survey results and the "That's me in the Corner" survey results. For both Wendy gives some explanation of her thinking behind each question and how people tended to respond. She also provides some background on the survey and her thoughts about the implications of the survey results for evangelization.

The most interesting thing on the site to me, though, is a page where she describes the groups of believers that she observed in the survey results.
Based on the survey and communications related to the survey questions, I here group the respondents into categories. As an artist, I often turn to the arts, and now, songwriting, to help give a flavor of the group’s thinking. I use songs, loosely interpreted and with apologies to the writers, to give a right brain slant to these left-brain studies. Each group formed when I felt more than ten people fit the description. Surely there are more groups to come.
Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-25475403816368707562010-10-25T18:49:00.005+02:002010-12-13T19:17:50.862+02:00Audio from Swedenborg Colloquium on the Future of the New ChurchOn October 9th there was an awesome event. It's lengthy title was “‘Behold I Make All Things New’ — How? The Future of the New Church, Swedenborg Colloquium.” The advertisements for the event simply said,
The public is cordially invited to hear 12 Swedenborgian speakers present a variety of visions for the future of the New Church.
If you couldn't be there, the best way to get a sense for what the event was like is to listen to the recordings of the speeches. To listen to or download the audio recordings, go to Independent Voice for the General Church Community (ivotgc.org), specifically to the Swedenborg Colloquium Audio page. The files are all in MP3 format.

I'm also going to put links to the individual talks below with a few scattered notes from me. If you were at the event (or just listened to one of the recordings) and want to add some comments, please do. My notes do not adequately represent what each speaker said.

Morning Session

Rt. Almost everything is there I just want to highlight some of the things that you might not find otherwise. In particular I want to let you know that there are ways that you can participate even if you're not near one of the participating congregations.

Videos

First, here's a little video introduction to the program:

Then there are videos of these people sharing their excitement about the program: Anna Woofenden, Michelle Chapin, and David Lindrooth.

There's also a video explaining how to use the workbook.

And finally there are introductions for the content for each week. Here's the one for Week 1.

If you want even more or want to know where you can find new videos as they post them, here's a link to their Vimeo account.

Sermons and Small Groups

If you're near one of the participating congregations, I'm sure that people would love to have you join them for worship on Sunday and join one of the small groups that they're running, even though the program has already started. If you're not near one of the participating congregations, you can listen to recorded sermons a day or 2 later on newchurchaudio.org or you can try watching a live stream of the service from the New Church of Boulder Valley (www.bouldernewchurch.org) at 10:30am MST on Sundays. They also have a video archive of past services but I haven't been able to make it work on my computer yet. I also know that people are looking into repackaging the video of the recorded services from Boulder in a more accessible way. I'll let you know if that happens.

And, if you want to participate in a small group but you're not near any congregation, you can join either of the 2 online, email based groups.

Blog

This is one of the main things that I want to highlight. This year they've created a blog (pauseprogram.wordpress.com) where participants can share their experiences as they do the program. This is another way you could get something of the small group experience if you can't attend one in person.

In addition to anyone who wants being able to post responses, they've also got a bunch of great staff writers who will be writing regularly. I think it will be well worth checking regularly or subscribing to. You can subscribe to receive emails at the bottom of the right sidebar.

Materials

The best way to get the basic materials for the program is to buy the workbook for $12.95 but you can also download the workbook for free. Downloading it is a good option if you'd like a large font version. You can also sign up to receive the workbook content in daily emails.

This year there's a lot more than just the basic workbook. There are small group activities and a small group leaders guide that you can download and stick in your workbook; there are extensive, high quality Sunday School materials for each week; and related marriage enrichment materials. The marriage materials are still being produced but the first week is available.

Facebook and Twitter

There's a Facebook page for Pause and a Twitter account (twitter.com/PauseProgram). If you want to tweet about Pause, use #Pause4God. Both of these will keep you up to date about Pause.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-24440995085937159292010-10-07T20:13:00.001+02:002010-10-08T16:12:02.891+02:00Help Create an Accurate Picture of Present Day Thought on Swedenborg's WritingsWendy Soneson is working on an article about what people these days think about Swedenborg's Writings. To this end she's created two short surveys to get input from people about what they believe. I took the "Defining Faith" survey and found it an interesting exercise and I'm even more interested to read the article that she writes. (I'll be sure to post a link to the article once it's written and published.)

Here's an introductory note from Wendy and links to the 2 surveys.
Dear Friends of Swedenborg,

I am collected data from two anonymous surveys for an article on present day thinking and belief among those familiar with Swedenborg’s Writings.

If you like to think about questions concerning your belief system, and have five minutes for either of these anonymous surveys (you would only be able to qualify for one), I would so much appreciate the information for my article. I will not know the names or emails of anyone who participates, or if you participate or not. Thank you.

Defining Faith
This survey is for those who are familiar with the Writings and think of themselves as generally in the category of a main stream General Church thinker.

That’s Me in the Corner
This survey is for those who are familiar with the Writings but do not think of themselves as mainstream General Church thinkers.

Contact Wendy with any questions at wendysoneson@mac.com.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-11583660891826166792010-09-21T16:30:00.001+02:002011-05-02T22:00:40.939+02:00The Loving Arms Mission Has a NEW Web SiteThe Loving Arms Mission used to have a web site at lovingarmsmission.org. Unfortunately that site got hacked and so had to be taken down. But, now they have a couple of new sites.

Their main site is lamchildren.org. It's a nice looking site with plenty of pictures and information. (If it gets too detailed for you, you might want to skip down to WHAT'S THE POINT?.) I'm guessing that I'm going to over explain some things and under explain others. Feel free to ask questions if you have them.

I'm sure there are lots of other ways that Together could be used to organize sermons. Let me know if you decide to use it in some other way or if you use some other system for organizing your sermons and feel like describing it.

ADDING A SERMON

1. Open Note: Open my "Processing a Talk" note to remind what I do to process a talk. Together allows you to make notes. I've circled in red where notes are stored and I put a red star on the title of the note. A preview of the note shows up to the right but I recommend double-clicking on the title so that the note is opened so you can switch back to it again more easily. (The red arrow is pointing to the tab that shows that it's open.) And then you can see the first instruction (underlined) which is to double-click on the file to keep track of it.

Screenshot 1

Screenshot 2

2. Add Files to Library: There are several ways you can add files to Together. I usually drag and drop them into the Library (the area circled in green). I say files because I often have lots of documents associated with single sermon—research files, drafts, and the final draft. Once you've added files to the Library they show up under Recent Imports. In this case it was 10 files (I circled it in green and put an arrow to it).

Note: when you add files to Together it copies the files into a Together folder in your Documents folder. And when you put the files into folders and sub-folders it does the same thing on your hard drive. So, once you've copied a file into Together, you can delete it.

3. Label Files: Together allows you to label files, tag files, put files in groups, and put files in folders. Labels in Together are like radio buttons—a file can only have one label. I use them for keeping track of which file is the "Most Recent" version and which other files are "Worth Looking At" the next time that I'm looking at a given sermon (see Screenshot 2).

4. Put Files into Folders: Once I've identified the most recent version I scroll through that until I've identified what the text is for the sermon—in this case John 13:1-17. Then I make a folder with that title in the right part of my folder hierarchy (see Screenshot 3). I have a top level folder called "Sermons By Text" (circled in red). Within that are "1-Old Testament," "2-New Testament" and "3-Heavenly Doctrines." Within each of those is a folder for each book. And within the right book ("4-John") I make a new folder. I put numbers at the beginning of the folder names to get them in the right order.

I also have folders for "Resurrection Services," "Sermon Ideas" (I'll say more about these later), and "Sermon Notes" (for notes about sermon writing).

5. Add File to Group: Groups work like playlists in iTunes. You can add any files to them, in any order (you can also make smart groups, like smart playlists, though I haven't found any use for them yet). I have 4 groups: "Not Preached Children's Talks," "Not Preached Sermons," "Preached Children's Talks," and "Preached Sermons" (circled in green on Screenshot 3). I use these groups to keep track of those 4 things.

Screenshot 3

6. Tag Files: We've finally reached the most important step. I only tag the file labeled "Most Recent" so that numbers for each tag are accurate to the number of sermons that have that tag. Once I've selected the right file I click the "i" icon (circled in light blue on Screenshot 3) which brings up information about the file; then I select the Tags tab (circled in light blue with an arrow) and add tags.

These are the types of tags I use (with an example in the format I use): Date (2010-4-28); Location (College Chapel); Text (T-John 13:1-17) [the "T-" is to distinguish it from times when I might tag another sermon with John 13:1-17 because I cite that passage but it's not the text]; Text book (John) [this is so that I can keep track of how many times I've preached from each book of the Word]; Title ("Giving Advice Following the Lord's Example"); Series [if it's part of a sermon series which this example wasn't]; Lessons/Other Passages (DP 27, Matthew 16:18); Themes (advice, humility, image and likeness, love of dominion) [I'm pretty loose with what I put under theme]; Type (Sermon) [4 options: Sermon, Children's Talk, Resurrection Service, Family Talk].

Screenshot 4

7. Sort Tags into Tag Bundles: This function was one of the main selling points for Together for me. If you click the Show Tags button (circled with an arrow in purple/pink on Screenshot 3) you get the screen shown in Screenshot 4. And here you can move tags into tag bundles. In Screenshot 4 I've expanded Tags and Title. If you haven't used a tag before, it's in Tags and you can drag and drop them into the bundles that you make. You can select multiple tags at once using shift and command as you would expect. Getting the tags to drag and drop can be frustrating; the trick is to pull them a little to the right before you try to move them up or down.

WHAT'S THE POINT?

This might seem like a lot of work but, now that I've figured out how I want to use it and got it set up, adding a new sermon is actually pretty quick. And there are 2 main reasons why it's worth all the work: analyzing my sermons and finding my sermons.

Using all of these tags and groups and bundles makes it easy to find out when I last preached a sermon, what I've preached in a certain location, how many times I've used a certain passage in my sermons, how many times I've preached from certain books of the Word and which ones I've never preached from, etc.

Together also makes it easy to find a certain sermon. Say that someone asks me a question about merit. I know that I've written at least one sermon about that but I might not remember what the text was (and so if I just had my sermons in folders by text it would be difficult to find it). Using Together I can either search all of my sermons for the word merit (and it's easy to find the documents worth looking at first in the search results because of the labels) or I can go to the Themes tag bundle and click on the merit tag. Then I remember that I have a children's talk and a sermon on merit and because I can see all of the tags that both have, it's easy to go find the relevant folder and find all of the research documents for both talks. Sometimes the best piece of information for answering the person's question is not in the sermon itself but in the research document. And, because Together gives me the use of folders as well as tags, I can easily group all of the documents I generated while writing a given sermon. Hooray for hierarchical and non-hierarchical storage!

Another bonus about the way Together works is that, once I've found the file that I want, I can preview it in Together but when I double-click on it, it opens it in the original program (even awesome, atypical programs like Scrivener). Some of the other programs I played with had to open the files through their own weak editors and so could only open basic file types.

Together is also good for working with sermon ideas.

WORKING WITH SERMON IDEAS

When I have an idea for a sermon I also put it into Together. First I write down as many thoughts as I can about the idea in a document. Then I save it to my desktop, drag and drop it into Together, and drag and drop it into the Sermon Ideas folder. Then I tag it with as many things as I can think of, all with SI at the beginning (e.g. SI-entrance into faith) to distinguish them from tags on actual sermons—possible titles, themes, text or lessons, possible main message, etc. Then I go and sort all of the tags into the sermon ideas tag bundle, "Z-Sermon Ideas" (the Z so that it will be at the bottom).

And then, when I need to write a sermon, I can look through all of the different sermon idea tags and see what I want to explore further.

CONCLUSION

I hope this rather nitty-gritty tour gives you a sense for why I'm so excited about this as a sermon organizing solution.

Together costs $40. Is it worth it? I've been happy with it. If you think you might like it, you could try the free 15 day trial and then decide.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-74230275617371438132010-08-16T19:31:00.000+02:002010-12-10T22:10:25.113+02:00Why Does the Bible Have So Much Disturbing Stuff in It?I recently read through Deuteronomy and was reminded of how confusingly harsh and disturbing certain parts of the Bible can seem at face value. It made me grateful again for the New Church teachings about how to understand scripture.

In the most recent issue of New Church Connection there's one of the best short explanations of these teachings that I've come across. Even if you're familiar with these teachings I recommend taking a look at Rev. Thane Glenn's article about this, "Real Challenges: Biblical Contradictions".Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-79555967400298616532010-08-11T18:44:00.000+02:002010-08-11T18:44:14.509+02:00Good Articles About Grief and SuicideNothing works to totally make sense of death and suicide but sometimes words and ideas can help. Here are a couple of articles that I found helpful and useful.

Here's an article that Rev. John Odhner wrote about what we can learn from the Writings/Swedenborg about suicide: "Reflections on Suicide". (You can also download a Word doc version of it here.)

And here's an article that Rev. Brian Smith wrote about the wounds that come from losing a friend: "Tearing".

And here's a post that Rev. Mac Frazier wrote about despair.Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-73361690197930008192010-07-20T21:07:00.000+02:002014-07-25T07:36:49.596+02:00A Good Sermon about Bitter WatersI was catching up with Rev. Coleman Glenn's blog (colemanglenn.wordpress.com) and read a sermon he preached 2 weeks ago in Toronto "Bitter Waters Made Sweet". It's a good one. Here's an excerpt:

And then you realize it: you’ve stopped focusing on the Lord. You’ve stopped focusing on your commitment. You’ve stopped taking the time to think about how to love the Lord, how to love the people around you. Maybe you’ve stopped reading the Word. Maybe you haven’t been going to church. You realize what’s been missing. And so with hope you open up the Word to your favourite passage, you attend a doctrinal class, you go to church. You recommit yourself to your goals. You’re ready to get back on the right path. You see the cool waters right in front of you, and you take a deep drink.

And there’s nothing there. The same words that in the past have inspired you fall flat. You read the Word, but it’s not joyful; it’s a chore. Your doctrinal class feels meaningless. Church is boring. The waters that looked so refreshing, so cooling, so life-giving, are bitter!
Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-55298360679751391572010-07-15T23:13:00.008+02:002011-07-30T10:57:02.181+02:00Find the Context of Passages from Arcana CoelestiaWhen I'm researching something in the Writings (the teachings of the New Church written by Emanuel Swedenborg) I often want to understand the context of what I'm reading. I want to know what chapter and section I'm reading from. In most cases I can find out what I want to know from looking at the tables of contents for the individual works on the Read the Revelation page of SwedenborgDigitalLibrary.org. (See, for example, the page for New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine.)

Passages from Arcana Coelestia (or Secrets of Heaven) are some of the main ones that I want context for—I want to know what text is being explained and what the general subject of the chapter is. If you look at the page for Arcana Coelestia on Swedenborg Digital Library, the first thing you'll see is a break out of all the doctrinal explanations that are interspersed between the explanations of the stories. This is helpful but not what I'm often looking for. If you read carefully, you'll see that you can also jump down to Auxilary Contents, which does tell you where the explanation of each chapter begins but not where it ends.

I wanted a little bit more so I decided to put together the tool below. A couple of notes: Typically the summary of the inner meaning of the chapter is the next passage after the first one listed for each chapter. The Kempton Project links take you to a more accurate translation of the text from the Word (read more about that here) and let you research where else in the Writings that text is discussed. The Bible Study Tools links take you to the New King James Version of the text on the very useful www.BibleStudyTools.com. And the chapter summaries come from here. I put this together mostly as a tool for myself but let me know if you find it useful or think of ways that it could be made better.

UPDATE: With help from Ian Thompson, the creator of www.BibleMeanings.info, the Arcana Coelestia links now take you to the relevant portion of that site. You'll find that it gives you a very handy interface for exploring the context of a given passage from Arcana Coelestia.

If you want to jump directly to a specific passage on BibleMeanings.info copy this URL and put the passage number you want at the end: http://www.biblemeanings.info/scgi-bin/hdref.cgi?p=AC (e.g. http://www.biblemeanings.info/scgi-bin/hdref.cgi?p=AC453).

---

Arcana Coelestia Passage Context Finder

Jump to...
1000 | 2000 | 3000 | 4000 | 5000 | 6000 | Exodus (6633) | 7000 | 8000 | 9000 | 10000 | End (10832)

6 - 66 | Genesis 1
God created the heaven, the earth, plants, animals and man in six days
Genesis 1 on Kempton Project
Genesis 1 on Bible Study Tools

73 - 167 | Genesis 2
God blessed the seventh day; Back in May they published a post titled "Ornaments in the Theological First Editions of Emanuel Swedenborg".

I finally got around to reading it and discovered that NewChurchHistory.org has an article by Jonathan Rose on it about the ornaments titled "The Ornaments in Swedenborg's Theological First Editions". He wrote the article in 1998 and, in addition to including lots of interesting original research, the article also includes good quality images of all of the ornaments used in Swedenborg's theological first editions. For example, here are all of the Title Page Ornaments. And don't be deceived by the display size of the images; if you click on them you can download nice big versions of them. (Note: the Fun Fact says that the images can be downloaded for educational purposes so don't go selling them for millions of dollars.)

I don't know, maybe this is only cool to me but I'm pretty excited about figuring out somewhere to use these cool images.

While we're on the topic of stuff from Swedenborg's first editions, I should mention that BaysideNewChurch.org, in addition to some other pretty cool resources, has scans of all of Swedenborg's first editions available for download. The files are mostly just dumped there so you have to hunt around to find a specific passage but it's a great resource to know about. (If you're lucky enough to have a copy of Kempton Project that's not too old and if you can get a copy of the first edition files on CD, then you might be able to use Kempton Project to jump directly to the relevant image for a specific passage.)Malcolmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00821503222923390569noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081822122781502706.post-70835894833411085432010-06-23T21:49:00.000+02:002010-06-23T21:49:46.830+02:00Listen to Bishop Louis King's Service OnlineBishop Louis Blair King passed into the Spiritual World on June 21st, shortly before 6am.
